UA Local 740 Secures Offshore Agreement on the hook up and integration of the West White Rose Project!

The recent announcement regarding the integration of the Cenovus topsides and the concrete gravity structure is a significant development for Newfoundland and Labrador. The technical contract has been awarded to Aker Solutions, with Pennecon and Cahill JV handling the welding, fabrication, and craft labour in support of the hookup for the West White Rose Project.

With the offshore integration occurring 350 km from land, UA Local 740 members will be at the helm!

This venture is monumental and leaves little room for error, given the harsh weather conditions and challenges of the Atlantic Ocean. It will require collaboration and perseverance from the local workforce to overcome the significant challenges and complex issues during the execution stages. This project underscores the resilience and pride of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, as it will depend on highly skilled unionized trade professionals who have honed their expertise through the successful delivery of previous offshore developments in the region. With seventy-five years of union and employer partnership, the project is a testament to delivering safety, quality, and productivity. Together, we will leverage our longstanding relationships to ensure success.

As we move forward, we remain focused on finalizing language in labour agreements to supply mechanical (UA), instrumentation (UA/IBEW), and electrical technicians (IBEW 2330) essential for the work ahead, with a mutual dedication to the project’s objectives. The UA and IBEW are partnered and working diligently to secure this work on your behalf. When we stand united, we achieve great things! Of course, we can’t do this without you! Your support and assistance are needed as we complete negotiations for the additional technical skills.

Our expectation is that members only go offshore with referrals from their respective Local Union.

More than just a large-scale industrial endeavor, this project represents the ingenuity and potential of the unionized local workforce, serving as a beacon for future employment opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador. With the global spotlight on this project, our community will rely on its well-known traits to ensure flawless execution and the future catalyst for local work opportunities. This initiative celebrates homegrown talent and demonstrates a commitment to fostering a robust, self-sustaining economy in Newfoundland and Labrador.
